Organizational Information
FirstEnergy Corp. was formed in 1997 through the merger of Ohio Edison Company and Centerior Energy Corporation. FirstEnergy Corp. expanded its operation with an acquisition of GPU, based in Morristown, NJ in 2001. Recently, FirstEnergy completed a merger with Allegheny Energy, a Greensburg, Pa.-based company that served 1.6 million customers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia. FirstEnergy serves over six million customers in six states that covers 65,000 square miles. FirstEnergy employees over 17,000 employees in all six states. Today, FirstEnergy is one of the nation's largest largest investor-owned electric system based on the number of customers served.
Employee Treatment
FirstEnergy has grown since its formation in 1997. FirstEnergy now employs over 17,000 people in the six states that FE operates. FE developed a rating system to help identify employees for future promotions. FE employees are rated from 1 to 9 in the new system. 9 is the top number that identifies the individual as a highly successful candidate for future promotions all the way to 1 which means that the candidate is performing the tasks and duties to perform at the level desired but it not considered as a promotable employee. The rating system is based on education, performance, attitude, and annual reviews which help identify strengths and weaknesses.
This type of system incorporates the five categories in the organizational culture survey. The rating system provides respect in regards to have power over their future career paths. The annual review provides feedback from the managers vision on what is needed from the employee to either continue down the path of success or give direction if the employee is seeking future opportunities in their respective department or future departments where their skill set would provide future opportunities.
