* Sudden unavalibilty of liquid resin supplies(a critical ingrediant input for plastic productions) coupled with sharp increases in resin prices caught ‘Top Plastics’ management unprepared

COMPANY HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

* Wholly owned by subsidiary of Alpen Paper Corporation and was formed in 1960

* 1950 – Plans for forming Top Plastics first were concieved.

* Alpen’s corporate headquarters was located in Meridian , Mississippi.

* 1958 – Diversification of its productline beyond the confines of te paper industry.

* Reasons for Diversification:

1. Alpen had a opportunity to sign a contract with German Plastics Company for the American patent rights to a new plastics manufacturing process.

2. Market research studies indicated that te plastics industry ad an execellant growt potential in bot volume and profit.

3. Allowing te company to serve its both line of products.

4. A good possibilty existed that technological interfaces between paper and plastics might permits the devlopment of several entirely new products.

* Top Plastic selescted Monsanto Company and Koppers,Inc., as its chief suppliers of liquid resin.

* TPC marketing force was comprised of four salesman, each assigned to a specific product classification.

* 1961 – TPC further expanded its sales coverage by contracting wittwo independent distributors in Memphis and Birmingham for the handling of TPC’s plastic products.

GROWTH AND EXPANSION AT TPC

* 1965 – TPC built a plant in Tawanda , Pennsylvania,the company’s first plant outside of the South east.
