It is evident that our nation’s population is continuously shifting. I live in Endicott New York, which had a population of 43,954 in 2000 and increased to 44,264 in 2010. The majority race is Caucasian, out of the 43,954 population in 2000 42,608 of them where white. However, there was a 2.25 percent decrease of whites in 2000 to 2010. I was shocked to find that there was a 68.56 percent increase in black/ African Americans in 2000 to 2010.

It is hard to speculate any trends when I only see data from two points in history. However, there are many changes that we can assume happened consistently over the ten years and they are; an increase in the Black/ African American race, decrease in households with two parents, and an increase in people who live along, just to name a few.

The decrease in households with two parents didn’t really surprise me. I know more people now who are divorced than are together. Having done some research I have found that before 1970 divorce was relatively uncommon and very difficult to get. A no fault divorce was put in place and stated that couples no longer had to prove one person was at fault. This law had a great effect on the divorce rate. This led to more families living with only one parent. It is said that, when society changes divorce changes. Women have become present in the workforce which led them to be independent and aren’t supported by anyone. With these changing times divorce in now widely accepted and couples that may have stayed together are now divorced due to these laws.

Not only are fewer people getting married but also waiting later in life to do so, this leads to more people living alone. I am 23 and a great deal of my friends are continuing their education and renting an apartment while doing so. I think this is more common throughout our country that people are putting more effort into getting an education before settling down and tying the knot.
