Hispanic American Diversity

The United States is a melting pot of many different cultures. Different people from all over the world make up our diverse communities however; most groups still retain some of their original heritage except one. Hispanic Americans make up a large part of our nation and even though the people that make up this group come from countries all over the world, they are grouped together by language and not culture. Hispanic Americans do have many similarities however there are also vast differences between the nationalities that we here in American refer to as Hispanic Americans.

Mexican Americans

Mexican Americans make up the highest number of Hispanics in the United States, and like most immigrants that have come to America; they try to achieve the American dream. About 90% of the Mexican American population has ancestry that can be traced back to rural and impoverished areas of Mexico (Mexican Americans, 2006) Most of the Mexican American population still lives in the south west part of America were their ancestors originally settled.

The Spanish language is a strong force in almost all Mexican American households. In fact 70 percent of all Mexican American household speak both English and Spanish. (Mexican Americans, 2006) It is the shared speaking of the Spanish language that links Mexican Americans took other cultures in the Hispanic community. English is used mostly for public speaking such as business and school however when involved in a religious or cultural event Spanish is spoken. However, the Spanish spoken by Mexican American differs from the Spanish spoken by Mexicans. Mexican Americans tend to mix English and Spanish together, creating a dialect known as Spanglish.
