Review

This case study involves an interview between a counselor and a family as they are involved in a marital and family therapy in an attempt to open up communication and promote effective parenting. This case epitomizes the effect of secret traumas in marital and parenting communications. The counselor will begin the process by consistently employing the structural family therapy techniques which involves a brief marital and family therapy session to open up communication and eventually promote effective parenting. The counselor is also sensitive to the effects of the Hispanic culture of the counselees. The goal of this review is to critique the diagnosis as well as the therapeutic techniques utilized in this case and also talk about points of agreement and disagreement. I will include my thoughts about the accuracy of the diagnosis and offer any additional diagnoses that I think are warranted.

According to Golden (2002), this case is based on an interview conducted on a 10 year old fifth grade elementary school student named Esperanza and his family regarding her conduct in school. His family comprises of his father, Ernesto his mother, Gloria and siblings, Miguel and Arturo. Based on the information reaching the counselor from Esperanza’s teacher, Esperanza is uncooperative, refuses to complete school work, refuses to follow directions, runs away from the school building occasionally, engages in name calling with peers, bossy, has stolen on numerous occasions, exhibits severe mood changes and has isolated herself.
