Public Health and Health Care Paper

A public health agency ensures good public health by promoting healthy lifestyles to improve the health of the community, prevent injuries, and detect and prevent infectious diseases. The role of the people within the public health agency is to determine the functions and services that ensure good public health. These agencies gather population data through various resources and access threats to the community due to chronic diseases, environmental factors, sanitation, substance abuse, disasters, or any other causes. There are several governmental and non-governmental agencies that help provide services to the communities and are involved in population health maintenance and improvement. Center of Disease Control and Prevention is a federal public health agency that protects people’s health and safety by preventing diseases and promoting wellness.

Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a public health agency whose mission and vision is to provide expertise, tools, and information to help people protect their health. CDC has headquarters in Atlanta and has over 15,000 employees all over the world ("About CDC", 2012). CDC is a part of Health and Human Services of the United States that is heavily involved in protecting public health. CDC is involved in a wide range of health threats, including infectious and chronic diseases, injuries, birth defects, food and water safety, bioterrorism, environmental hazards, and occupational health and safety. CDC also administers funding for state and local health departments, community-based organizations and academic institutions for a variety of public health programs and research. CDC touches thousands of lives every day and responds to health emergencies and any health issues of the community.
