In attending the study tour I hope to gain a greater understanding of the taxation profession and the roles of the different organisation’s that we will be visiting and how they all work with each other. From the review of the itinerary provided I can already see how divers taxation is, which I hadn’t been aware of. Personally I think this will allow me to look at all the options I have, career wise, within taxation field and get and idea of which areas most get my interest.

Monday 27th August

Before:

Today we are going on a tour around Parliament house - new and old. I already know that parliament house is where all the political parties meet. I have never been very interested in politics in general as a result I don’t know anything about the working environment within parliament i.e. how laws are made and the structure in which it operates. On todays tour I expect to come away with a different perspective of Parliament and obviously a great knowledge of the process of the house itself.

Touring through old parliament I think will be very interesting – although Australia is a young country there is still a lot of history there and I would like to know what significant events had taken place there. It would be interesting to compare how the operations of both new and old Parliament house differ and what has remained the same.

We are also meeting with representatives from treasurer’s department. I am aware that the treasury plays an important part drafting taxation legislation and not only do they deal with taxation issued they also deal with aspects of budgeting and international issues (just to name a few). I hope to gain through their presentation how they the process of creating new tax legislations and I would also like to know how they got to the positions they are.

After:

After visiting parliament house today, I did not realise how big and amazing both the new and old parliament house is. I also now have an in-site (although only small)...
