Racism Paper

In the first movie clip, The Difference between Us, they started out talking about a definition humans put behind the word race. Race- divisions among people that are clear cut and biological or found in the genes. Most people base their own definitions on eye color/shape, skin color, body shape, hair etc. In this movie, simple external differences are connected to internal differences. Not too long after stating this, they stated that no genetic can distinctly define one race.

Students decided to explore biological variation, by stating who they believed were the most similar amongst their classmates. Every student named someone with the same physical features that I mentioned earlier. After their predictions were taken, blood samples and swaps were taken from inside each student’s mouth.

While waiting on the results from their experiment, track runners were interviewed on their perspectives of race. Each runner claimed that race played a roll in their physical capabilities. The white runners believed that black runners are faster due to genetic advantages. Black runners felt they were superior to the white runners and didn’t feel threatened by them in a race. Whatever these runners’ beliefs may be, the truth is that genetically, humans are the most similar amongst all living species. Penguins have twice the genetic differences as humans and fruit flies 10 times the amount!

When the final results from the experiment came in, the students were astonished. Every student was completely wrong. The classmates most similar to them were the exact opposite as the ones they had predicted. This experiment showed that physical differences in which humans label as “race” have little to no influence on their actual genes.
