Huge amount of military forces from US and Canada arrived 4 days after disaster. The team brought water purification units and provided medical, and communication services. Nations all over the world provided over US$14 billion in aid for damaged regions

Eleven days after over 20 national Red Cross Societies were present in Sri Lanka to support the relief operation.

For a country that had not previously experienced such a disaster, Sri Lankan institutions responded reasonably well. Essential medical aid, emergency food and other relief supplies were mobilized within a day. A lot of people received shelter materials. Temporary classrooms and safe spaces for children were established.

TOURISM

The Ministry of Tourism assisted the tourism sector The industry is also receiving duty free import privileges for necessary equipment for reconstruction, and the Central Bank has a loan facility for small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) which covers the tourism industry. The Tourist Board aims to develop 15 tourist zones at a cost of US$ 12 million each with donor funding.

ENVIRONMENT

The Government of Sri Lanka, quickly requested urgent assistance from United Nations Environment Programme to work with national experts in conducting a rapid environmental assessment of the damage caused by the tsunami and how to recover from it.
