1. Introduction

1. My community

My community is one of the neglected groups in our country. Phomolong is a rural community of approximately 2000 residents with many teenagers and adults who are not working. There are limited recreational facilities, resulting in the youth being vulnerable to alcohol and drug abuse, pregnancy, gansterism and

unemployment.

2. Poverty

Most young people are school drop outs as a result of substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. This results in big families with one or no person working. The sum of this and unemployment lead to poverty in the majority of households.

2. Application of the principles of community psychology

1. Prevention

Prevention involves ways to minimize or prevent the problem rather than finding means to treat it. Poverty in my community emanates from lack of education and unemployment among the youth. The programme I would design will focus on educating the youth on issues such as teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and other social topics. The programme will also involve construction of many recreational facilities that will engage the youth. The youth will be encouraged to pass high school and tertiary education and be employed and eventually prevent poverty.

2. Change

In order to prevent poverty social change needs to be effected I collaboration with community members, who will ultimately own the process of change. The lifestyle of youth...
