My name is Oliver Brown and I am black. My daughter’s name is Linda Brown. We live closer to an all white school. Linda has to walk past this school every day in order for her to get to her all black school. I tried to enroll Linda into the all white school, and they denied her entry because she was not white like the other children in that school. I find it unfair and unjust for my daughter to walk 7 miles to the bus station that takes her to her school. My daughter deserves to attend the school that is closer to our home. It brings peace of mind to a father to know that his little daughter is safer if she has a shorter distance to travel on foot. Under the constitution it declares, “All men are equal.” It is certainly not equal if my daughter has to be subdued to attending a school that is less convenient for her. I believe that education is important for these children. Why should my family have to suffer through a school that doesn’t have the same benefits as the all white school? Linda’s classroom is overflowed with children and don’t have enough textbooks, while the all white school has a desk for every white child and a nice playground. Having the schools separate does not make them equal. Separating my daughter, and other children like her, because we are of a different race and color is not right. It teaches our children that they are lesser than those of other races and they have no bright future ahead of them. It’ll make them believe they are not important. We make up part of the American population, why aren’t we included in the same benefits as of the others that live here in the United States of America?

Sincerely,

Mr. Oliver Brown
