There has been varying arguments on whether democracy favors written or oral culture. Some people believe that written culture is favored by democracy while others believe that oral culture is favored most by democracy. Oral culture can be described as a culture that has not been touched by any writings. A literate person can only imagine how oral culture looks like as it is seen as a culture that has no knowledge of writing and there is no possibility of writing. It is a culture that no one has tried to look up for anything. In my own view, I believe that democracy favors written culture more than oral culture.

Without any writing, words may have no visual presence even though the items they represent are visual. In a democracy, one is allowed to express their ideas and thoughts and hence without writing, one may not be able to express themselves fully. In oral cultures, expressions and thoughts are additive instead of subordinate. In written discourse, there is a more fixed and elaborate grammar compared to an oral discourse. In a democracy, what matters most is the way in which one expresses themselves. Oral cultures lack existential contexts which are necessary in determining the meaning of words.

An oral culture is aggregative instead of being analytic. Democracy encourages analytic views where one is able to critics certain things depending on their personal philosophies. Democracy allows individuals to choose their leaders who are then held accountable for the conduct and policies while in office. If one goes wrong, people who chose him or her are able to analyze their actions in a democracy. People are allowed to be analytic in a democracy and that is one component of a written culture. Instead of just being aggregative and follow the leaders blindly, democracy encourages people to air out their views and certain issues.
