Diversity in the workplace

Problem Identification

The crucial problem in this case study is a diversity in the workplace between Vietnamese and Latino.

Diversity ... Everyone seems to be talking about it. Businesses offer training on it, politicians support it, the media salutes it(DuPont,1999). Diversity is generally defined as acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing, and celebrating differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status (Esty, et al., 1995). Diversity means different. In other word, different are what diversity is all about. It could be race, Cultural, background, or any personality type .Furthermore. Some people let diversity get in the way of their relationships with other people. But successful organizations realize that people's differences can be their strength — if they combine their skills, experiences, and ideas while still valuing each other as individuals. As Abraham Lincoln said, "United we stand, divided we fall." (DuPont,1999)

Diversity issues are now considered important and are projected to become even more important in the future due to increasing differences in the U.S. population (Green, López, Wysocki, and Kepner,2002). Companies need to focus on diversity and look for ways to become totally inclusive organizations because diversity has the potential of yielding greater productivity and competitive advantages (SHRM, 1995). Managing and valuing diversity is a key component of effective people management, which can improve workplace productivity (Black Enterprise, 2001).

Although many organizations are now offering diversity training for their employees, diversity is not really a skill or something for which you can be trained. Diversity simply means "differences ". It can convert in to meaning of differences in people. Whether diversity becomes an asset or...
