Cell phones have become enormously popular in recent years, and innovation, along with smaller and more advanced technology, has led to phones that have many different functions. One function that has recently been offered is the ability to purchase and download software programs, called mobile applications, onto your phone. These programs are developed specifically for handheld devices, and often for a specific model. The invention of the smartphone has increased the popularity of mobile applications. Smartphones are phones that provide advanced capabilities and features, faster processing speed, and usually have a larger screen or touchscreen (Hansberry, 1). This relatively new, but popular, trend in technology allows businesses to develop and sell their own applications separate from the business, or provide services to customers that compliments an existing business.

Mobile applications have many advantages that can help businesses. Wireless devices are enabling organizations to conduct business more effectively. Almost any business can create an application that could generate customer interest, client loyalty, and can position a company as an industry leader. Mobile applications can support trade with customers and suppliers, and can also be used to conduct business within organizational boundaries (Lim & Selmer, 20). Companies including UPS and Wells Fargo have recognized these advantages and have adopted the use of mobile applications in their businesses. UPS, a package delivery company, offers a mobile application to its customers for tracking packages and confirmation of delivery. Wells Fargo, a major U.S. financial institution, uses mobile applications to provide banking services to customers quickly and conveniently (Lim & Selmer, 24).
