The NETT Day session Google in the social space was very interesting. Amy Korin and Ashley Lepczyk explained the importance and advances made in using social media. Before the session I heard of google +, but was not familiar with all the features it had to offer. Ashley and Amy went into some detail by explaining how google + has put in place circles that allow the user to separate different groups within each circle. This is useful because it allows for more control of how the user can share information. Furthermore, during the session Amy explained that by correctly utilizing social media companies can increase their target markets and overall sales.

Google is by the far the most used search engine, and allows its user to find information on practically any subject or issue. However during the session there were some questions regarding Google’s policy of determining what should be allowed on the site and what shouldn’t. Google has a well-known policy of don’t be evil, and to not share the user’s information without his or her consent.

The video of Islamic prophet Muhammad created a lot of controversy because some people believed it was a hateful attack and undermined their religion, while others wanted the video to remain because they believed if it didn’t there rights of free speech were being violated. Ultimately Google kept the video up. According to Amy Google provides the desired information, but it is up to the user to use the information in a responsible, respectful manner. Overall I agree with Google’s censorship policy and although at times mistakes may happen it’s better to have access to information to form your own conclusions rather than have someone form them for you.
