Chapter 1

PRE COLUMBIAN WOMEN

www.precolumbianwomen.com

This website is dealing with the role of women in Ancient America right before the arrival of the Europeans. It is mainly focused of their role in Aztec, Mayan and Andean societies.

The website explains how their role differs depending on the culture and the region. In fact, in some culture they are in charge of the children, the food for the family, and weaving textiles. In other regions, some hold a position in the market while in some others they occupy essential position in religion and politics.  Finally, in some other cultures they have role as object, trade good, slave, and subject of horrific ritual brutality.

This website is well detailed and goes beyond what history textbook have. It is supported by pictures, maps and graphics to portray what is explained. It is well organized by topics.

Before this website, I thought that Pocahontas was only a Walt Disney fiction. I learned that, on the contrary, Pocahontas was a real woman, and that the movie was based on a true story, to depict the role and restrictions women might have in those societies at this period.

The website www.precolumbianwomen.com taught me a lot about the role of women in the North American ancient culture, however, I think that it should cite more sources, and have more references to scholar articles or journals.
