In my opinion, being a life-long learner is an everyday experience of our natural life span. If you are not learning, then you are dying. One just does not awaken to life at the age of 55 and realize that he or she is a lifelong learner. No, it is happening gradually every day. According to famous American Writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson, "life is a succession of lessons, which must be lived to be understood." The brain is a muscle. Like anything else, if you do not use it then you are going to lose it. If nothing is growing, then it is vanishing. I was not ready to learn a lot of things. My eyes and brain were open, and yet I was empty inside. My new life-long learning attitude went into full effect a couple of years ago. I can recall when I just started out pursing my educational goals amongst other interests. I was far from being an experienced learner. I was completely a rookie in the classroom. However, I knew there was an overabundance of knowledge out there waiting to be unchained, and that is what I did. Many grown folks have trouble learning; I included myself in that category. The reasons are plentiful. It could be a lack confidence in one’s self. The manner is in which they approach their goals or not having that role model to guide them on the right path. To learn means that we need to adjust some things in our lives to accommodate these changes, and from personal experiences. This is not something I am willing to do most of the time, like so many other folks. But it is by taking that one small step forward that we are able to remove ourselves from our calming environment; such as jumping into the deep sea, learning new and old things, and becoming a lifelong learner. Being a lifelong learner is more than just stepping up to the plate to bat because it is your turn. It means making that commitment to bat all season and for the remainder of your life.
