This report contains Alcoa’s recommendations to the Local Network with regards to compliance with principles 9 and 10 of the Global Compact, which state that businesses should encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies and work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery (The Ten Principles. Accessed 13/04/11.) respectively. We believe that, in Western Australia, these are the two principles with the most significance and as such should be the focus of future actions by this Local Network.

Despite only becoming a signatory of the Global Compact in 2009, we believe that our ongoing commitment to be open, honest and trustworthy in all dealings with our stakeholders (United Nations Global Compact. Accessed 13/04/11), combined with our years of experience in dealing with and developing environmentally friendly technologies in many different countries places us in a position to make qualified recommendations to the Western Australian Local Network. As a mining and smelting focused company, we also understand that the recommendations we make may not be entirely suitable to all industries, and as such believe that they should be amended to fit the industry they are being applied to. However, as a large part of Western Australia’s economy, particularly those MNCs operating here, is based around mining and industrial efforts, we believe our recommendations will have relevance to the majority of the members of the Local Network.

While we are the first to admit that we are not the most environmentally friendly corporation out there, we like to think that we are doing the best we can to reduce our impact on the environment, both locally and globally. We ensure that all our facilities have the latest pollution controls in place, and that any accidental mishaps are quickly dealt with, and any damage to the environment contained, if not erased completely.
