Essay: The Civil War

The Civil War took place between the years of 1861 and 1865. Although it began because of many things, the Civil War seemed to be inevitable because of slavery, economic differences, as well as many physical disputes. The Civil war fired up because of Slavery because the Southerners relied on it, the Northerners opposed it, and it caused secession. Also, the Economic differences between the North and South didn’t help with the situation either. The North was industrialized, the South relied on farmland and crops, and the North had a much stronger economy. Last but not least, physical disputes between the North and South led to the Civil War because death of many African Americans occurred, as well as the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Not long before the Civil War, the North and South had different views on Slavery. The Northerners opposed it, and the Southerners were all for it. Disagreements over slavery heightened regional tensions and eventually led to the breakup of the Union. However, the modern Democratic and Republican parties emerged from these political tensions. The North, with its diversified industries, was less dependent on slavery. As the North industrialized, their opposition to slavery grew more intense. Supporters of slavery realized that this was an opportunity to create more slave states; while opponents remained equally determined that slavery should not spread. In the long run, the Compromise of 1850 became law, and the enforcement of this fugitive slave law became a problem as many abolitionists tried to escape. Secession then occurred after the Dred Scott decision. The Dred Scott decision had arose when an African American named Dred Scott claimed to be a free man because he was temporarily in the Northern states, when the federal court said that he was considered “property” rather then a citizen, many people became furious.
