The History of the United States Postal Service
The United States Postal Service is by far the first courier service in America. The United States Postal Service is directly responsible for keeping the people of our Nation connected to one another by shipping personal letters, business correspondents, and other items. The United States Postal Service in an independent agency that earns its revenue from postage and other fees. The United States Postal Services is one of the largest employers in the United States.
History
The first post office was introduced to America in 1692 for the purpose of the English to establish offices within King William and Queen Mary’s main parts of their colonies and plantations (Huebner, pg. 126-74). These post offices were established by Thomas Neale under the British crown, and appointed Governor Andrew Hamilton as his deputy postmaster. “The United States Post Office (USPO) was created in Philadelphia under Benjamin Franklin on Wednesday, July 26, 1775 by the decree of the Second Continental Congress” (USPS). The Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General. In 1789, the federal post officer was created under the government of the United States as well as the Office of the Postmaster General.
