Role and Functions of Law Paper

Law is a word we here every day, whether it be on the street, television, or read about it in an article or newspaper. This term plays an enormous role in our society today, as well as in our business world. Without laws in place for society and business, many breakdowns across the world would take place leading to complete dysfunction of society and business. In this paper, we will discuss some important functions that laws play in business and society as well as the role ad function of laws in my own personal workplace.

In Cipollone vs. Liggett, The U.S. Supreme court ruled against Cipollone because the claims he had brought to court were overridden by federal law. This is one example of how federal law and state law can intertwine. According to our constitution, Article VI, states that “the laws of The United States shall be the law of the land”. In this case, a state law can be overturned due to the federal jurisdiction that the law of the land controls. Having a federal law in regards to this topic is a good idea because if it was right to sue cigarette manufacturers in one state and not others, many people would flock to that state to try and collect on the suits that they can now file in that state.

The role of law plays a huge part in how successful a business can become and operate in society. These roles in business pertain to ethical standards of the business world which is a very important part of business. Without ethical laws in place, business would become violent, cutthroat and downright destructive to society. Business laws are also in place to settle any issues or disputes in business and to basically set out a set of rules that society and business people must obey.
