Social networking is the use of online technologies to communicate with people and share information. It was used by the military-centric command and control scheme. It soon grew to the level where computers were connected for people to discuss topics of interest and even connecting with acquaintances and other people.

You could also join any of CompuServe’s many discussion forums to talk with thousands of other members on virtually any important subject of the day. Those forums proved tremendously popular and paved the way for the modern networking, as we know today.
