1. How does the heart change as it develops in a fetus?

It starts off as just a tube, bends, and twists back, forming its shape. Atria are separate and ventricles are beginning to separate

Aorta; carries nutrient-rich blood away from the heart

3. What is pulmonary circulation?

Movement of blood from the heart to the lungs, and back to the heart

4. The sound you hear when you listen to your heart with a stethoscope is actually what?

Ventricles contracting and valves closing

5. Distinguish between systole and diastole phases of the heart.

Systole: pressure with which the blood begins to flow represents the pressure of the hearts contraction

Diastole: More air is let out of the cuff, muffling the sound and representing the pressure of the heart’s relaxation

6. Distinguish between an artery and a vein.

Artery: carries nutrient-rich blood away from the heart

Vein: carries waste-rich blood back to the heart

7. What is a sphygmomanometer?

Takes blood pressure

8. How is hypertension treated?

a) For mild cases, diet modification and exercise

b) For severe cases, medications (I.e. diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers)

Progressive disease that is characterized by a plaque buildup in the arteries

Electrical discharge within heart that can be recorded to measure the hearts condition
