Mussels Shells as Tiles

I. Questions

The study addressed the following specific questions:

1.) Is there a difference in the durability of the tiles according to the number of shells per gram?

2.) How long would it takes to finish the product?

3.) Is this product durable?

II. Rationale

Mussel is the common name used for members of several families of clams or bivalvia mollusca, from saltwater and fresh water habitats. These groups have in common a shell whose outline is elongated and asymmetrical compared with other edible clams, which are often more or less rounded or oval. The mussel's external shell is composed of two hinged halves or "valves". The valves are joined together on the outside by a ligament, and are closed when necessary by strong internal muscles. Mussel shells carry out a variety of functions, including support for soft tissues, protection from predators and protection against desiccation. It is a perfect ingredient for making tiles.

III. Methodology

A.) Gathering of materials

The researcher will buy the mussel shell, sand paper, tile cutter and ceramic clay in the market. Then the researcher will borrow a kiln for the procedures to be done.

B.) Procedure

The researchers will wash the shells and pulverize it. Then they will measure the powdered shells into 50g, 75g and 100g in a container.

After that they will roll out a 1/4- to 1/2-inch sheet of ceramic clay and flip the slab of clay over and roll it out on the other side to prevent the clay from warping during the firing process.

Then, they will cut out the tile shapes and press the mussel shell pieces firmly into the clay in any pattern you wish and allow the clay to dry out and they will place it in a kiln and fire to recommended temperature

Let the tile cool.

C.) Treatment Of Data

D.) Data Collection

Data will be collected after the product’s testing...
