FarmVille, developed by Zynga, is a popular farming simulation game on Facebook. It is a 2D browser based, online multiplayer which lets players step into the shoes of a local farmer. Starting out with a small plot of land, users must grow and harvest a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers and grains, earning money and eventually expanding the farm, equipping it with new features, such as livestock and machinery to eventually make their farm bigger, better and more exciting than everyone else’s. I have chosen to review this app because I have an account and am quite familiar with the game and most of the aspects that are involved.

Time and patience is a big part of Farmville. Each crop has its own set time until it is ready for harvesting, it could be hours or even days before a crop is ready, usually the longer ones are more expensive to buy, but the reward is bigger. Once ready for harvesting, there is only a small time slot where the user is able to harvest and make any profit, otherwise the crops die and any money initially invested has been wasted. The point and click process when planting and harvesting crops can be somewhat time consuming and not very interesting, but that’s the price that the user must pay if they want their farm to improve at a faster rate than other peoples.

In the majority of online games, it is the user’s character that levels up with experience, but in FarmVille, it is each individual crop. There is a huge range of crops, which include; wheat, strawberries, rice, daffodils, cranberries, aloe vera, etc, each of which, has three levels of mastery. The player must plant and harvest a set amount of crop in order to upgrade to the next level of mastery. Most crops require about 2000 harvests or more. This idea of having more than one thing to level up is somewhat more addictive, and also makes it seem as though there is more to do.
