Football Coach Leadership Theory

Football Coach Leadership Theory is about leaders creating relationship with followers through evaluation, individual development, team development, and situational delegation of authority. To develop this relationship, leaders need to have a sound philosophy, a developed mission, and a clear vision.

Football Coach Leadership Theory is cyclical, consisting of four stages. The four stages are philosophy, building, preparation, and execution. Each stage requires evaluation. The cycle begins with philosophy. From philosophy the model advances to building. The subsequent stage after building is preparation. The final stage is execution. Upon completion of the execution stage, the leader is to begin again at the philosophy stage. The last move from execution back to philosophy requires a reassessment of the entire process to be applied to the next cycle of leadership. This reassessment is to be conducted at infinitum or as many times the cycle is conducted to continue to improve the leader and followers.

The philosophy stage is the first stage. In this stage the leader must develop a philosophy, mission, and vision. The leader is to develop a philosophy to instill in their followers in the pursuit of goals sought. The philosophy is very important in that helps support and define the mission and vision. The mission is what the leader wishes to accomplish. The mission is the most important step in the philosophy stage. Followers need a clear understanding of the goals. The vision is how the followers are to achieve the goals.

The building stage is the second stage. In this stage, the leader must evaluate his followers both on an individual and team level.
