The Inconvenient Truth

The recent super typhoon Pablo had struck our country specifically Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. It was reported that Pablo left the two provinces with a devastating tragedy where houses and buildings were destroyed and most of it had no roofs, the trees had fell down and plenty of people were buried alive. Seeing that news, I suddenly remember the documentary film “An Inconvenient truth”.

   

 In the film, Al Gore presented a connection between global warming and the intensity of hurricanes. He explained scientific studies on increasing ocean temperature and continued that as the oceans get warmer, storms get stronger. Al Gore’s observation is also alike with another article which mentioned about a study in the journal Nature. The study found that hurricanes and typhoons have become stronger and longer-lasting over the past 30 years and they correlate this with a rise in sea surface temperature. These statements are quite alarming for us knowing that hurricanes and typhoons bring destruction and threat to our lives. Super typhoons in the Philippines lead to vast human and economic loss. Like in Mindanao, many people are suffering and in hardships. I remember in a child-oriented comedy show, a child once said, “In the past, when it rains, people leave their houses to play in the rain. Today, when it rains, people leave their house to evacuate.” This joke is a reality for us to consider that typhoons have become more powerful and violent because of global warming.

   

 The documentary film awakens us on the serious effects on the environment and society of global warming. As mentioned in the film, our increasing population puts pressure on the earth because there are stronger demands for food and water and oil for fuel. We humans are liable for this climate change.
