ANTIFOAM / DEFOAMER WITH THE FOAM GENERATOR UNIT

Papermaking Technologies Industry: Category: Test Procedures Sub Category Antifoams/defoamers Description: Equipment/Needed 1micropipette Foam generator Sampling information Samples without addition of antifoam/defoamer. Procedure: 1.Add sample to the foam generator unit Add enough sample to give a level of 600 mL in the cylinder after the pump is filled with liquid. This level varies from about 500 mL to 700 mL with the foaming tendency of the liquid used. If the liquid foams heavily, you might be able to use less volume and get a good test. However, you may need to increase the amount of liquid used if the foam is carried down into the pump and causes cavitation and fluctuation of The top liquid level in the cylinder.

2. Recirculate the sample until a constant level of foam has been generated. For each test, recirculate the liquid until this constant level of foam has been reached before adding the product to be tested. You may choose to recirculate the liquid for a specific amount of time for each test i.e., 2 minutes. 3. Add the defoamer to the unit and note the foam level after a specific amount of time i.e., 15 seconds. Continue recording the foam level at intervals of 15 or 30 seconds until the foam level becomes constant again. This gives you a measure of how good a "defoamer" the product is, that is, can it kill foam. If you are interested in seeing how good an "antifoam" product is in a system (i.e. does it prevent the formation of foam rather than kill foam after it is already present), you might add the foam control product just before turning on the unit. In the control, the foam builds up to about 950 mL and with the various foam control agents it builds up more slowly. In some cases for various reasons, it may not be possible to get an accurate reading of

the foam level while recirculating the liquid. In such a case, you can measure the foam level after the unit is shut off....
