Death of Distance Reaction Paper

10/15/12

There was many things that I was unaware of before I viewed the movie Death of Distance. One part that really surprised me was the amount of training that the foreign workers have to go through to get onto the floor of call centers. The fact that they have six weeks of training until they hit the floor and two weeks that are simulated like they are actually American, where they have to get trained to learn the different accents and lingo. This surprised me because they have such a lengthy training for overseas employees, whereas if they were in the states, the training wouldn’t be nearly as in-depth. A worker wouldn’t be in training for more than a week to get formal training for a call center. Which leads me to think that since there is more time spent on training the employees overseas, the wage each worker makes in India is significantly lower than the U.S. wages to cover the training costs and the actual costs to outsource the call center. This made me think about our first issue talking about outsourcing and how little the foreign workers get paid in comparison to an American worker. This also reminded me of the recent article that we read called The Man Who Took My Job. Its interesting to see how an American worker actually felt when he saw someone who took his job and the condition they had to do the job. This makes me wonder how the American people who lost their jobs to the off shoring, if they saw who was taking their job if they would have the same reaction, or if David was just a unique human. I wonder if people saw the people who were taking their jobs maybe they would be less upset with the outsourcing and maybe just me more upset with the lack of jobs that and they will be looking for new opportunities with out hate.
