The journey to become literate

Being literate is a very important thing in life. Being literate it’s being able to do things on your own and with understanding, it can be more than reading and writing. The reason why being literate is important it’s because you will be able to communicate easily should it be writing emails or CV’s to apply for a job, u will also be able to read poster on newspapers. You will also gain lot information.

Talking of literacy I remember S’phiwe’s first day at school when she was not able to read and write. She use to feel excited about going to school, but when she get there things changed she felt so small and embarrassed each time her teacher ask her a question in class and answer it wrong ,because her classmates use to laugh when some of them say wrong answers or couldn’t read. Thanks to her teacher who had been patient with her and taught her every word and spelling she did not know. She improved day by day, from there she started to enjoy school again and her classmate no longer laughs at her.

Being able to read and write at my primary level was not the end of learning, it was just the beginning. She went to the secondary school. She had to face same more challenges and changes. She had to learn with a different language from her Mather tongue, she felt so overwhelmed and she was staying with different people who also speak different languages with different backgrounds. She could find it so difficult to communicate with them, because she was afraid she might find herself in the same situation that she had experienced from primary school.

Some of them could speak English as if it was their Mather tongue by that time she try to count words they would just complete a sentence for her they would be like “oh you mean…’ even those who talk the same language as hers will never try to teach her or explain to her.
