Week 2 Worksheet

1. You have a friend who is of Jewish heritage; however, she has no religious belief. She asks you why, if God is good, He permitted the Holocaust to happen. What would you tell her?

Being that she is from a Jewish heritage and I am a Christian, we do have God as a commonality. She may not practice the Jewish religion, but she knows it. So I would explain to her that God gives us free will. We have the option to want to believe in Him or not. This free will is comes from also having to deal with the enemy in this world. Both are tugging us back and forth hoping that we will cross over to a side. Those sides are righteousness and evil. Because there is evil we know the feelings of empathy, compassion and sadness. And that the enemy takes on many faces to try and guide us towards the path of darkness; that is our challenge in this life, but if we choose to honor Him, then we will one day know no sorrow and pain.

Only some Jews believe in a Christian type like hell, but even if this friend didn’t, I could use the analogy that others Jews have about bad things happen in this world because people sin; this thought is that the more people sin, the more bad things will happen in this world.

I could use scripture from the Bible in this case if wanted, but being that she is from a Jewish heritage it would probably not work.

2. You want to convince your professor that the reading load he has assigned is too heavy, given that you also have to write a research paper. You are asking him to eliminate one book from the class assignments so that you can concentrate on your own research.

I would create a time line example of the assignments. I would put an estimated, but accurate, time frame as to how long it would take to read the assignments, and then do the same on how long it will take to research and complete the paper....
