Barriers to effective communication in a one to one setting

My one to one communication was with a confused and forgetful client who was suffering with the early stages of dementia and had just moved into residential care. The client was confused about why she was not going home and wanted to call her son to take her home. As the client was hard of hearing, this was a barrier as the client was not able to hear what I was saying to her. The second barrier to our communication was that my client became agitated and distressed whilst trying to express what she was saying. This was a barrier because the client became unsettled and her body language became closed and uneasy about the situation. Towards the end of the meeting the client had settled and had started to come to terms with her new surroundings until the light in the room started to flicker. This then became a barrier as it startled my client and she started to become upset and saying she wanted to go home.

Barriers to effective communication in a group setting

Within the group communication, a meeting was arranged by the manager to discuss a complaint being made against a member of staff for failing to use appropriate equipment for a manoeuvre. During the meeting a carer came into the office without knocking on the door, this became a barrier as this interrupted the flow of the communication cycle, In order for all types of communication to be effective; you must be able to listen to what is being said by others. When the manager was asking the carer why she had moved her client without using the correct equipment a drilling noise started to sound from the room next door, this was a barrier because the sound of the drill made listening to what was being said by the carer in question.
