1. INTRODUCTION

General Motors Company is an American multinational automotive corporation and among the world’s largest automakers by vehicle unit sales (Galligan, 2012), doing business in more than 150 countries. General Motors is divided into five business segments: GM North America, GM Europe, GM International Operations, GM South America and GM Financial (GM Annual Report, 2012).

In 2009, General Motors shed several brands and emerged from government backed Chapter 11 reorganization (General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization). Before the automotive industry crisis of 2008-2009, in financial terms, GM was vulnerable. In 2005 the company posted a lost of US$10.6 billion (GM Corp. 2005). In 2006, the attempts to obtain new commercial alliances with Nissan and Renault failed and then sales for the following year dropped by 45% (Usborne 2008). As it emerged from bankruptcy and reorganization in 2010, GM reorganized the content and structure of its brand portfolio (Merriam Associates, Inc 2010), moving into a multiple brand corporate invisible brand architecture structure (GM History, 2011). According to this reorganization, the GM operations risk management has place focusing on managing the process to produce and distribute their products and services, including the measurement and analysis of the corporate structure and its internal process.
