What do you think is the biggest problem of the Mauritian economy today? What would you suggest to improve the current situation?

Mauritius despite witnessing a remarkable success and development since its independence is still faced by many problems such as high rate of inflation, lack of strategic planning between the private and public sector, euro crisis, unemployment, lack of new technology, bottleneck in the education system amongst others. However, youth unemployment still remains the main challenge of the Mauritian economy.

Mother nature has not bestowed Mauritius with valuable resources such as gold mines, petrol, etc but the Mauritian population is one of its best asset that the country posses. Nevertheless, it can be seen that the unemployment rate is increasing each year in Mauritius about which about 40% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. This is due to a mismatch that exists between the skills that students acquire in schools and the skills that the jobs require. Students learn things which apply mostly in theory and not in the world of work. Hence this handicapped the school leavers. However this problem could be tackled if the less theory was taught and more research work encouraged. The private sector could collaborate with the public sector and provide quality education and training to students to better develop the students and prepare them for the world of market.

Outsourcing of cheap labour from countries like China and India aggravates the unemployment rate in Mauritius. In almost all sectors, it can be seen that there are foreign employees being employed instead of the local people since the former are willing to work for longer hours and at a cheaper rate. This gives rise to local unemployment and underpayment of the local people. This is not a new phenomenon in Mauritius but nothing is being done to solve this problem.
