Entrepreneurial Leadership

Jerry and Janine Murrell were a middle class family living and working in Northern Virginia, while saving money to send their sons to college. After learning their sons didn’t want to attend college, Jerry and his wife’s desire to keep their sons close to home led to their decision of becoming entrepreneurs in the private sector. The responsibility of a new financial endeavor despite the risks they might encounter. (Boone & Kurtz, 2012) They saw this as an opportunity to make a profit and risked the $70,000 they had saved for their sons college tuitions. (Burke, 2012) Most of the philosophy held by Five Guys was born out of his impressions of previous business ideas encountered. He was impressed by a small business serving only fries cooked in peanut oil; and Hot Shoppe owner, JW Marriott who stated “Anyone can make money in the food business as long as you have a good product, reasonable price, and a clean place.” (Welch, 2010) Five Guys have a few good products that are reasonably priced and maintain a friendly and clean atmosphere. They have grown into a successful businesses in the U.S. and Canada with continued developments internationally. This paper will answer questions on the success of Five Guys using concepts related to “Five Guys Burgers and Fries: Ingredients for Success”.

Five Guys Philosophy

1. Determine how five guy’s philosophy sets it apart from other fast food chains.

Five Guys philosophy is simple and “We follow the philosophy of focusing on a few items, and serving them to the best of our ability. If we were to add to our menu, then you can guarantee that we would only do so if we could serve the highest quality product possible.” (Five Guys Holding, LLC, 2012) By focusing on only a few high-quality fresh products instead of serving frozen and numerous products like many other fast casual food establishments, they have continued to set themselves apart from others.
