DETERMINING CAUSES AND EFFECTS
There are many environmental issues, and one that has become a serious controversial problem is water pollution. Through recent studies and research the quality of America's water has shown to be diminishing at a fast pace. The amount of contaminants and pathogens in our water supply has tripled in the past twenty years according the E.P.A. (Agency for Toxic Substances, Feb. 2001). The southeastern shore of Lake Huron has become a major issue in this subject. Throughout the past 6-7 years special agencies have taken preliminary measures to ensure the quality of the water does not get more contaminated than it already is. Scientist must focus on the main causes and come up with alternative action plans.
The first and most prominent contribution to water pollution is the enormous growth in population and the industrial nation. The ever expanding need for businesses and homes to build has contributed to rapid rise of fecal matter, toxins, and other harmful contaminants in our water supply. It is proven fact that clean, un-polluted water is essential to a healthy and active life. People all over our country are contracting waterborne diseases simply from drinking the water. The amount of pollutants recorded in our water supply is contributing to thousands of people being sick (Agency for Disease Registry, Sept. 1997). The toxins, pollutants, and contaminants that corporations are dumping into the water are threatening the entire ecosystem of The Great Lakes. Everything and everyone that rely on this water supply are being harmed indirectly. The food we eat, the water we consume, and the vegetation we grow are all contaminated, and as a result people are getting sick and contracting disease, and our wildlife are as well.
