This review critically reviews the article "No conflict between nursing ethics and helping a patient die with dignity': in our October issue, a nurse educator in palliative care, Julie Maher, argued against a draft bill which would allow patients to choose to die. Two more nurses join the debate on these pages, both arguing for the patient's right to choose to end an intolerable life" in the journal Kai Tiaki - NZNO Journals of nursing.

Assisted dying is currently legal in three European countries and three Unites States. Many other places it remains very controversial. For many years headlines have been written for arguments about the ethical and legal aspects of euthanasia or the right to die. New Zealand has recently decided to add a bill that if passed would allow them to join the other right to die countries. The possible passing of the bill brought up the conflict in New Zealand which is the hypocritical oath with nurses and doctors alike to cause no harm. There also is the fear that lots of vulnerable people may medically be assisted to die against their will.
