Professional Values and Ethics

Values and Ethics tend to go hand and hand, when we look at the two from a rationale angle; they play a key role in how individuals interact with one another on a personal and professional level. Key point is that if we value our lives, we would live an ethical life, such as treating people the way we would want to be treated, with respect and dignity because the value of life is precious.

Values are viewed by someone as a personal code, which he or she desire and think what’s important to them as an individual. Some people see values as rules that each person may use to define or outline what he or she should and should not do. On the other hand, ethics means knowing the difference between right and wrong and making the correct choices. They are the manner in which we make our decisions on a daily issues and how we respond and act to certain situations. When values and ethics are combined, we have a clear understanding of how people perceive information and how they will respond. Most of an individual’s ethical development occurs early in life and causes a ripple effect into one’s personal and professional lives.

There are many different types of sources for professional values and ethics, The New Oxford Companion to Law, grabbed our attention because it has to do with business, lawyers, judges and fellow subordinates whom also abide by strict values. It reads high ethical standards by upholding professional values in the practice of law. It is an important professional duty that lawyers owe not only to their clients and consumers of legal services but also to the courts, fellow lawyers, and society at large. High standards of ethical practice may indirectly support the rule of law, and in many countries lawyers are expected, individually and collectively through their professional associations, to promote, and when necessary to defend core civic and professional values connected with justice and due process of law....
