In the past, society was less developed. People were not able to live as long as they do today. Also they did not enjoy the benefits brought by advanced technology. The benefits of social development were not obvious. Currently, with the development of society, although it causes some negative effect, however the standard of living has been promoted, and many advanced technological products are being created. As a result, people’?s life and work are more convenience. In this essay “?the social cost of development”? will be defined as health problems and the disadvantages of technology. “?Too high”? will be defined as a high level of suffering. However people can benefit from social development. Therefore, it can be argued that the social cost of development is not too high. This essay will evaluate that, with the development of society, the standard of living has been promoted, and advanced technology makes life better and convenience.

With the development of society, the standard of living has been promoted. It is clear that people can benefit from medical development. Firstly, people can live longer than they used to. Doctors can detect and cure many potential diseases such as hypertension and cardiopathy using advanced medical technology. Medical development provides a good medical protection for human being. As a result, life expectancy has been increasing. For example in China, according to World Bank (2008, cited in Haller, 2012, p. 514) life expectancy in 1980 was 66 years, but 10 years later, in 1990, the life average expectancy increased to 68.1 years, and then the number increased to 73.1 years in 2008.
