Chapter One:

This chapter deals with the origins of the human species. Our knowledge of this subject is constantly changing. What you read in this chapter today is not necessarily what will be taught in schools just ten years from now. Certainly it is different from what we knew a generation ago. Our understanding depends on new archaeological finds taking place and what we learn from them. Thus far, a number of intriguing skeletal remains have been discovered which have been identified as various forms of hominids. Exactly how these different hominids are related, or if they are related, is still being determined. It is believed that the human species first appeared in Africa, but this is because we have not yet found evidence elsewhere to challenge this assumption. Access to evidence limits our knowledge, and it is very possible -- even likely, that fossils which can reveal much more are lost to us beneath large bodies of water as a result of the earth's geological forces forever changing the planet's surface. In any case our own human species as we identify it has been around for at least the last 44 thousand years. For most of this time people lived in nomadic, hunter-gatherer societies. This limited the size of the population because of the vast amount of land required to sustain just one person in this manner, perhaps more than 1000 acres. By 10,000 ago, however, people had begun to settle down into communities based on agricultural cultivation. Writing starts to appear about 5,000 years later and with it the start of what can properly be regarded as history.
