Introduction

In todays fast pace work place environment requires advanced network management systems in order to take advantage of enterprise level networking environments. A very commonly used type of network management solutions nowadays is a product created by Solar Winds called Network Performance Monitor (NPM) . Since it is paid software you can download a trial and install it within your environment before making the commitment of purchasing. Other products that I found useful were the Engineers tool kit which as an array of tools and software which I will mention in the paper as well.

What does Network Performance Monitor do exactly? Well based on some information I found on Solar winds website it can simplify the detection, diagnosis and help resolve a network issue before the actual outage occurs. How it does it is by polling an monitoring each system node that you must initially setup. Than uses SNMP protocol the poll health status as well performs ICMP (Ping) Checks to be sure a devices is responding properly. This all runs on a server they call Orion, which is installed, on any Windows based server. It also goes on to provide great graphical overview of your topology while mapping each end point to each other so you don’t have to. Pictured bellow is the coming dashboard you would see when you select your node.

Another great thing about NPM it will email you when it senses an issue and you can set your warning and critical thresholds as well. But you must remember to unmanage a node when you would like to work on it or else you will receive a bunch of emails while trying to actually work on a device.
