While reading Chapter Three: Listening: What Speakers and Listeners Should Know, I learned a few new interesting things. First of all, I learned that there are stages of listening, the first stage is the receive stage, which is where the listeners either ignores or attends to stimuli. The second stage is the comprehend stage, which is the moment where your listeners understand exactly what you are talking about or what you mean. Stage three is the interpret stage; this is where your listeners put meaning to your message. Then there is the evaluate stage, listeners will think about your message. After they evaluate they go through the respond stage and that is where your listeners give you feedback. Lastly, there is the memory stage, and that’s where your listeners will decide what to store or try to remember. You should try to keep your listeners listening, which involves catching there attention from the beginning of your speech and then trying to maintain the interest throughout your speech. You do not want to bore your audience to death or to sleep. From personal experience I have a tendency to drag topics out and it can get boring, over time I’ve gotten better at it but I still have issues maintaining anyone’s attention. Another thing on listening is do not be rude to the speaker, even if it is not exactly the most exciting speech, you should still try to listen as much as possible or at least pretend you are listening so you do not seem as rude. Also, don’t interrupt the speaker, you should not be talking to the person next to you or blurting something out in the middle of their speech. That’s so impolite and I know for a fact you would probably be upset if someone did that to you. Now speakers should know if their listeners aren’t listening because you should be able to pick up on a few cues or body movements from your audience.
