Polygamy

Polygamy has been widely practiced in societies throughout the world since the beginning of mankind, and is still common in Muslim countries, some other countries, and also some religious beliefs such as the Mormons. Polygamy is a form of marriage that permits a person to have more than one spouse. Should a man be allowed to have more than one wife?

On one hand, many people defend polygamy as an individual and religious right. They believe that it is an act permitted by religion and therefore shouldn’t be limited by any laws.

In addition, polygamists have the belief that it creates a certain balance between men and women because the percentage of women in the world population is far greater than that of men.

On the other hand, I believe that polygamy clearly undermines women. It should not be allowed in any society no matter what the reason because it is a disrespect to women.

In fact, polygamy has many negative effects on wives and their children. It often forces them to live in difficult economic situations and creates many psychological problems because women feel objectified and children find themselves rejecting their lifestyle. In addition, polygamy results in destroying women’s emotional and mental health because they become dependent of their husbands.

Although many religions authorize polygamy for specific reasons, Islam for example stands clear on the fact that a man can marry more than one woman if only he can provide equal treatment to his wives and that is both financially and emotionally which is impossible because one can not control his own feelings and love two or more people equally. This is why Islam came to the conclusion that a person should marry only one spouse.

Finally, I believe that polygamy must be completely abolished from all societies since we live in a world where women have come a long way from being dependent to men nowadays. This sexist act has no benefits for women and truly degrades the image of real marriage.
