Argument Summary

Michael Kimmelman’s article Women Who Hit Very Hard and How They’ve Changed Tennis discusses how tennis has changed over years and how women have improved themselves and the sport. Kimmelman discusses that women tennis players are just as good as and sometimes better than the males who play tennis. The whole game of tennis has changed along with the players and the effort that needs to be put forward in the game to be successful.

He starts off by discussing Justine Henin’s experience at the Wimbledon. Justine Henin is a professional tennis player who he describes as not being distracted and “absorbed with her coach” (512). The point he tries to make is that Justine Henin is involved in her game and focused, she is strong.

Kimmelman claims, “Women have certainly never hit harder…they’re stronger, bigger, faster, better trained and pushed above all” (513). He believes that Serena and Venus Williams have changed the sport to focus on power. Both of the sisters are very powerful and talented. Other women are compared as weaklings to them. The sport of tennis is changing in response to women like Venus and Serena Williams who strive to be the best. Before women like the Williams sisters started playing the game, it was thought that only 50 percent was given to get through a match. Today this is proven wrong. 85 to 90 percent of the athlete’s best talent needs

to be put forth to stay in and be competitive in a match. They have changed the game so much that even other tennis players are trying to do their moves on the court and try to be as powerful as they are.

Kimmelman even compares women tennis players to men and how they have improved. It is thought that women’s tennis matches are easy and not as powerful as men’s matches but in all reality women can be stronger than the men who play tennis.
