Practical and Emotional Intelligence

Intelligence can be put into two categories; Practical intelligence and emotional intelligence. Practical intelligence really defines a person’s ability to observe and understand the people around them, a sense of conformity as the text states “People who are high in practical intelligence are able to learn general norms and principles and apply them appropriately” (Feldman, 2013, Pg. 385). Emotional intelligence is different as it relates to our ability to interact appropriately with others, and the ability to conform to other mindsets. The text states “Emotional intelligence underlies the ability to get along well with others. It provides us with an understanding of what other people are feeling and experiencing” (Feldman, 2013, Pg. 385).

Practical intelligence is invaluable at the work place as it allows an individual to understand the normal flow of things, and process everything on a more appropriate level. When working for any organization it’s important to be able to catch on quickly to new things and have the ability to observe your coworkers to get more acquainted with the work environment. Emotional Intelligence is also very important in a work environment, as it is going to allow an individual to communicate better and make necessary decision about other based on those emotional understanding skills. Communicating on an appropriate level is going to make all of the difference when looking for advancement in the workplace. Being charismatic has always been an important factor when trying to find the way out of the bullpen, and into a nicer better paying position.

One popular television star does a great job of portraying very emotional intelligence. Her name is Zooey Deschanel, who is well known for her role as Jess in the popular TV series New Girl.
