Parent’s role: Notify the school authorities that your child has diabetes. Work with health care team to develop a diabetes management plan. Submit the signed diabetes management plan to the school authorities for their use. Provide contact information (phone number, cell number, emergency number) to the school. Participate in annual meetings with the school nurse to make sure everything in child’s chart is up to date. Supply the needed medical devices such as diabetes testing kit to the school for your child. Make sure they have insulin available at school for your child’s use, and snacks for use when needed.

4.a. What is SAS asking for in terms of what kids need while at school? SAS is telling readers that kids need the proper diabetes management while at school. The site tells you how to implement a diabetes plan and make sure your child will be taken care of while at school. An example of implementing a plan includes: developing a written accommodation for your diabetic child. This site helps prepare you to be able to send your child to school and be confident that the officials there will be able to take care of a problem if it arises. It also gives you information on your and your child’s right to attend school with diabetes.

4.b. What currently must a child/school do when a child needs attention for low/high blood sugar? The child needs to wear a medical ID bracelet showing that they have diabetes. The child should always have a quick acting source of glucose on hand. The child needs to tell a teacher or authority figure if they start feeling symptoms of high or low blood sugar.
