Professional Knowledge and Abilities Paper
The first Heart Association beginning in 1915 first started out as a group of physicians and social workers looking for a way to prevent and relieve the affects of heart disease (AHA, 2010). This group of physicians and social workers were greatly concerned with the amount of information available about heart disease and had hopes that patients suffering from this disease would no longer have to suffer the anguish of being subjected to bed rest until they met their end. Once knowledge began to spread that these individuals were attempting to collect information on heart disease other associations emerged later resulting in the founding of a national organization also known as the American Heart Association in 1924 (AHA, 2010). Since 1924, the American Heart Association has advanced financial, in its size, nationally and internationally, and included the involvement of both medical and non-medical volunteers (AHA, 2010).
The Association Today
Today the American Heart Association is made up of many highly educated and experienced cardiologists, compassionate volunteers, and a number of other equally important staff members. The association is currently in Dallas, Texas with eight affiliated offices located throughout the United States and Puerto Rica, with the mission of building healthier lives, free of strokes, and cardiovascular diseases (AHA, 2010). This association strives to spread awareness concerning heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, and obesity and also tries to encourage individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices. With the support of other organizations, charities, and the public, this organization has and will continue to reach the lives of many.
