Bullying Among Adolescents

A common problem among the United States in high schools is bullying. Bullying can incorporate the traditional bullying, where students get physical or verbal in attempt to break someone’s confidence down. It can also incorporate cyber bullying, which is online attacks through websites such as social networking. Both types of bullying have become a widespread problem among the United States, but the major problem is not just bullying, it is the attempts to prevent and control bullying. There is no set method on how to control bullying, which is attempted to be found through research. Traditional bullying and cyber bullying needs to be controlled by parents and school officials because children are continuously being affected, both physically and psychologically, which could potentially ruin their future and entire life.

Bullying has been a part of adolescents’ lives for many generations, which can affect the social and emotional development of them. In the article “Involvement in Traditional and Electronic Bullying Among Adolescents,” Juliana Raskauskas writes that bullying occurs during three different instances: “when a child is the target of any behavior that is (a) harmful or done with intent to harm; (b) repeated or occurs over time; and (c) characterized by an imbalance of strength or power, such that the victim does not feel he or she can stop the interaction” (2007). Traditional bullying includes physical, when students attack a peer physically, and verbally, when students use verbal insults or taunt other students (2007). Both types of traditional bullying usually occur together. A new form of bullying that has been shown through adolescents is electronic bullying, or cyber bullying, which is bullying using electronic devices, such as texting, e-mails, or social media sites.
