Abstract

This report contains information about virtualization, the different types of virtualization and also the history of virtualization. In this report one will also find the various advantages & disadvantages of virtualization.

Virtualization

The first matter to be addressed is to find out what virtualization is exactly. Virtualization can be defined as the creating of a virtual version of something but in computing this is the creating of a virtual version of a device or resource i.e. a server, storage device, operating system or even network resources. “Even something as simple as partitioning a hard drive is considered virtualization because you take one drive and partition it to create two separate hard drives. Devices, applications and human users are able to interact with the virtual resource as if it were a real single logical resource.” (Asiasoft Solutions, 2014)

Types of Virtualization

We can now take this chance to fully expound on these different types of virtualization to get a better understanding.

* Storage Virtualization – This type of virtualization allows numerous hard drives or other storage devices to be combined into one virtual environment (VE) for storage.

* Application Virtualization – This separates the operating system from the application. The application then runs on the server or another remote computer rather than on the computer where it is being used.

* Hardware Virtualization – This is a form of virtualization that uses one processor to act as if it were several different processors. The user can then run different operating systems on the same hardware, or more than one user can use the processor at the same time.
