The Aftermath of Violence

Every day victims of domestic violence claim their freedom from their abusers, and begin the long journey to recovering their lives and truly living. Is it possible or will the effects of long term abuse cut their journey short? Long term physical abuse can cause lifelong damage to domestic violence victims. Can victims push through this unseen pain after calming their lives?

There are many types of domestic abuse a spouse can inflict upon another spouse. Physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse and financial abuse are some common ones (Meyer, C. 2014) . When people think about domestic violence the first thought is black eyes and broken arms, but abuse can go much farther. Some different types of abuse are: emotional/psychological Abuse, emotional abuse is any use of words, voice, action or lack of action meant to control, hurt or demean another person. Words alone can damage a person as much as a strike to the face. Emotional abuse typically includes ridicule, intimidation or coercion. Ambient Abuse where false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory, perception and quite often, their sanity, Abuse by Proxy Abuser is when the abuser recruits friends, colleagues, mates, family members, the authorities, institutions, neighbors, the media, and teachers – in short, third parties – to do his bidding. Victims don’t even have to be touched to be victimized. Long term domestic abuse not only cusses chronic illness but mental illness as well. Victims of long term abuse can suffer from, arthritis and hormonal disorders, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, severe headaches and irritable bowel syndrome and more. Victims of domestic violence also display damage from old physical injuries, some from the chronic stress of living in fear for too long....
